Wolfpack win three of four volleyball matches last week

CLEARWATER — Playing four matches in three days, the Wolfpack netters wrapped up a successful week, winning three and losing just one match.
Now 13-9, Elgin Public-Pope John is riding a crest of momentum heading into a pair of triangulars Tuesday night (too late for press time) and Thursday night here in Elgin.
Facing Wausa Thursday night, the Wolfpack won a close match 20-25, 25-22 and 26-24.
After splitting the first two sets, EPPJ came from behind. They trailed 22 to 20 when Harlie Bode had a kill to pull within one. Then, in the rally of the match, Grace Rittscher’s pancake set up a second kill by Bode to tie the score. The teams then traded points. Wausa had one match point which they failed to convert. A kill by Kaylee Martinsen gave the Wolfpack a 25 to 24 lead which they then closed out the match by winning the next point.
Martinsen had a huge night at the net with 17 kills, Kayce Kallhoff had seven kills and Haley Zegers added six. Ally Wemhoff had a team-high 23 set assists in the match. Anna Heilhecker had a team-high 15 digs.
In the nightcap, the Wolfpack rolled to a 25-13 and 25-22 victory over Clearwater/Orchard. After winning Set #1, the Wolfpack had to fight off the Cyclones in Set #2. With the score tied at 22-all, EPPJ won the last three points. Heilhecker’s pinpoint serving and strong net play forced the Cyclones into two attacks into the net. On match points, Zegers’ kill gave the Wolfpack the victory.
The week began with a triangular held at Humphrey St. Francis Tuesday night, Oct 2. EPPJ defeated St. Mary’s 25-14 and 25-22. The Wolfpack’s front row played a big part in the victory, producing 25 kills. Kallhoff and Bode led the way with seven kills apiece, Zegers had five and Martinsen added four.
Another key to the victory was serving as the Wolfpack racked up six ace serves. Grace Rittscher contributed mightily to the total, notching three while Martinsen, Zegers and Wemhoff each had one.
The only loss for the Wolfpack last week came against Humphrey St. Francis. The Flyers prevailed in three sets, 25-18, 17-25 and 25-15.
The Flyers, particularly in the third set, just wore down the Wolfpack with their attack.
For EPPJ, Martinsen led hitters with 13 kills, Zegers had 10 in the match. Wemhoff recorded 31 set assists. Hurting the Wolfpack’s cause was 31 dig errors.
