Wolfpack Win Elgin Invitational Wrestling Tournament

ELGIN — For Coach Doug Jones and the Wolfpack wrestling team, the Elgin Wrestling Invitational Saturday was a day to remember.

Eleven Wolfpack wrestlers earned medals and shared in the biggest prize of all — a team championship.

Coach Jones said the Wolfpack entered the final round in third place in the team standings, then had tremendous success which vaulted them to the championship. The Wolfpack won the team title, amassing 161.5 points. Finishing second was the Aurora JV with 145.5 followed by Grand Island JV 136.5; Hartington CC 72.5, Madison JV 59.5, O’Neill JV 52, Ponca 51, Grand Island JV purple 50, Nebraska Christian 44, Clearwater/Orchard 36 and Boone Central JV 26.

Earning gold medals from the tournament were Wolfpack wrestlers Brett Kinney, Derek Henn, Nathan Anderson and Anthony Hemenway. Finishing second in their respective weight classes were Harley Janssen and Jared Seier. Other medal winners were Sebastian Janssen (third), Austin Heying and Shane Beckman (fourth), Shane Vanis (fifth) and Alex Grosserode (sixth).

The Wolfpack will return to the mats Saturday when they compete at the Bill Foster Invitational to be held at Gibbon.
