Wolfpack Rolls Past Lady Eagles

O’NEILL — Elgin Public-Pope John jumped out to a comfortable lead in the second quarter and rode it to a 45 to 26 victory over the Lady Eagles Saturday.
The Wolfpack broke open a close game by outscoring the Eagles 10 to three in the final six minutes of the second quarter to take a 19 to 12 lead at intermission. The Wolfpack overcame foul problems which sent leading scorer Jenna Parks to the bench for the majority of the second quarter. She picked up her third foul at the 5:25 mark with the Wolfpack leading by just three points, 13 to 10. Picking up the scoring slack was the trio of Baylee Wemhoff, Jill Schindler and Hayley Stamp. Each had a field goal during the run.
Leading by seven points to start the second half, the Wolfpack outscored the Eagles 14 to five in the third quarter. Schindler, a 5’8” junior forward, had eight points in the quarter, scoring in the paint for the Wolfpack. Her prowess at the offensive end of the court helped the Wolfpack build their lead to 16 points with one quarter to play.
In the fourth quarter, Wemhoff and Liz Selting each had four points to seal the team’s ninth victory of the season against just two losses.
Parks led the Wolfpack in scoring with 11 points. She was five of eight from the field. Schindler was the only other Wolfpack player to score in double figures, she had 10.
The Wolfpack made 20 of 56 shots from the field (36 percent) compared to the Eagles who made just eight of 36 field goal attempts (22 percent).
A key statistic was turnovers. The Eagles had 31 turnovers in the game compared to just 17 for the Wolfpack.
The victory boosted the Wolfpack’s record to 9-2. O’Neill fell to 1-10 with the loss.
