Wolfpack Girls Win Cedar Valley Holiday Tournament

CEDAR RAPIDS — Having scored just five points in the third quarter, Elgin Public-Pope John stormed back in the fourth quarter for a come-from-behind 41 to 35 victory over Cedar Valley to win the holiday tournament.

Playing Friday afternoon, the Wolfpack had their hands full with Cedar Valley as the host school led 20 to 19 at halftime. Then, in the third quarter they outscored EPPJ 10 to five to take a commanding lead.

However, to their credit, the Wolfpack didn’t panic. Coach Randy Eisenhauer kept the team calm on the floor and suddenly shots which weren’t falling earlier in the game found the mark. In the final eight minutes of the game, EPPJ outscored Cedar Valley 17 to 5 to rally for the victory. “The girls played a great tournament and fought hard in two close games,” Eisenhauer said. “They all played well and again Chelsi Mescher had a double-double in points and rebounds for both games.”

Leading the scoring parade for the Wolfpack were senior Lauren Selting and junior Chelsi Mescher. Each had 13 points in the game. Cedar Valley was led in scoring by Skyler Erickson with 17 points. The victory boosted the Wolfpack’s record to 7-2. Cedar Valley fell to 7-2 with the loss. In the consolation finals, Burwell defeated Neligh-Oakdale 56 to 55 in overtime.
