Wolfpack Girls Top Stuart in NVC Tourney Opener

ELGIN — Tied after three quarters, Elgin Public-Pope John put together a big fourth quarter to defeat Stuart 49 to 36 in the quarter-final round of the NVC Girls Basketball Tournament.

With the score tied 30-all, eight minutes left to play and senior standout Lauren Selting on the bench with a leg injury, the outcome of the game was in doubt. That’s when senior Ashley Bode stepped to the forefront. She scored six fourth quarter points including a trey to help spark a 19 to six run.

With the score tied 32-all, Bode nailed a trey from near the top of the key to give the Wolfpack the lead for good.

Stuart cut the score to 36 to 24 with a basket by Brittany Hanzlik at the 4:47 mark of the fourth quarter.

The Wolfpack answered back with a deuce from Stephanie Bode, and baskets from Ashley Bode and Chelsi Mescher to create a seven-point margin, 43 to 36, with 1:47 left in the game.
