Wolfpack Girls Defeat Ewing

EWING — The Lady Tigers led early before Elgin Public-Pope John turned it on Friday night to claim a 61 to 35 victory.
The battle between NVC opponents looked, at the outset, like it might be a good game. That changed over the last half of the first quarter when the Wolfpack’s up-tempo attack outscored Ewing 19 to 3 to take control of the game. Senior Jenna Parks had two treys and accounted for eight points in the 19-point outburst, freshman Ally Wemhoff added five points.
Once the Wolfpack took the lead, they never slowed down. Parks and Wemhoff teamed up to score the first nine points of the second quarter as EPPJ took a 28 to 12 lead. Ewing managed just nine points in the quarter as the Wolfpack built a 36 to 18 lead when the buzzer sounded. Helping to keep the offense running smoothly was Baylee Wemhoff with a trey and sophomore Lydia Behnk with an inside basket.
The teams traded baskets for much of the third quarter. A two-pointer by Jordan Mescher gave the Wolfpack a 43 to 25 lead at the 3:30 mark of the third quarter. Ally Wemhoff added a trey and Baylee Wemhoff another two-pointer and Amy Nelson came off the bench to get a basket as the Wolfpack took a 48 to 27 lead after three quarters.
Wolfpack starters played just three minutes at the start of the fourth quarter before reserves came in to close out the game. Before heading to the bench, Liz Selting added a field goal and Baylee Wemhoff scored four points.
Sophomore Calli Krebs scored late in the fourth quarter as did Behnk to close out scoring for the Wolfpack.
Parks and Ally Wemhoff tied for the team-high in points with 18 apiece.
The victory boosted the Wolfpack’s record to 12-3.
