Wolfpack Girls 3200 Relay Headed to State

ATKINSON — Four red-clad Wolfpack runners made sure Elgin Public-Pope John would be represented at the State Track & Field Championships this weekend in Omaha. Marin Heithoff, Taylor Schumacher, Chelsi Mescher and Courtney Schumacher gave the Wolfpack their only ‘gold’ medal Thursday at the C-7 District Track Meet held at West Holt.
Competing in the 3200 meter relay where the foursome has recorded some of the fastest times in northeast Nebraska this season, they didn’t disappoint Wolfpack fans who came to watch Thursday afternoon.
With temperatures hovering near 90 degrees and a light breeze, the relay team trailed for only about 200 meters in the race as they dominated the other teams in the field. Heithoff started off strong in the opening leg, only to see Ainsworth take the lead late. The Wolfpack’s second runner, Taylor Schumacher caught and passed the Ainsworth runner 200 meters into her leg and built a 20-30 meter lead when she handed the baton to Mescher. In the third leg of the race, Mescher turned in one of her best efforts of the season as she maintained the lead and added to it late in her leg. Courtney Schumacher then finished off the race making sure everyone else knew they were racing for second place, not first.
The relay team will next compete Friday in the opening event of the afternoon session of the state track meet. The race is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Burke Stadium.
