Wolfpack Era in High School Sports Begins Thursday

What has long been anticipated is about to take place. Beginning Thursday night, athletes from Pope John Central Catholic and Elgin High Schools will compete together on the same athletic teams.

School colors of orange and black (Elgin High) and blue and white (Pope John) won’t soon be worn again in sporting events. Instead, they have been replaced with the Wolfpack colors of red, black and silver. Each school is well represented on the wrestling team as well as boys and girls basketball teams. The boys basketball team will be coached by Pope John’s Tory Gilson. He will be assisted by EHS principal Jimmy Feeney III.

The girls basketball team will be led by Randy Eisenhauer from Elgin High School. Joining him on the bench will be assistant coach Brad Cornell of Pope John. Both the boys and girls teams will open the season on the road at Verdigre Friday night.

The wrestling team will be under the guidance of long-time EHS wrestling coach Doug Jones. Mike Zegers, last year’s head coach at Pope John, is just one of the assistant coaches on the team. The wrestling team will open the season Thursday at a double dual at Randolph. A preview of the sports teams begins on page seven.
