Wolfpack Defeats Burwell 18 to 14

BURWELL — Thunderstorms and lightning filled the skies Friday night, but the real ‘power’ was on the ground as the Elgin Public-Pope John Wolfpack defeated Burwell 18 to 14.

The ‘power’ was the Wolfpack’s size and strength which materialized on the field time and time again. And, the power was on display on one fateful play when, with the game in the balance late in the fourth quarter, the Wolfpack converted on a crucial third down.

It was a battle of two rated teams, the winner would have the inside track to the district title and a likely higher seed in the state playoffs. The loser would face a much tougher road in the playoffs.

“I thought our kids gave great effort throughout the entire game. We had several kids step up and play well when we faced some adversity. I was proud of their effort,” said Coach Carlie Wells.

“However, we just didn’t capitalize inside the ‘red’ zone. Each time we had a self-inflicted penalty. I believe this will be a great game to learn from.”
