State Speech Competition Features PJ, EPS Students

Students from Elgin Public and Pope John high schools competed Friday at the State Speech competition held on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
Competing in Class D-2, EPS students’ Ethan Fischer and Danny Smith participated in duet acting. They placed fourth in both of their preliminary rounds, accumulating 93 points. However, they did not advance to the final round of competition. Winning the state title was the team of Mary Hawk and Erin VanHorn of Ewing.
Representing Pope John at the D-1 state speech meet was Jenny Beckman. The junior competed in serious prose. She finished second and fifth in her preliminary rounds and did not advance to the finals. She finished with 95 points in the two rounds.
Winning the event was Margaret Reynolds of Paxton.
