St. Mary’s Defeats Crusaders

ELGIN — Cold shooting in the third quarter proved costly to the Crusaders Friday night as O’Neill St. Mary’s defeated Pope John 64 to 47.

After playing a very competitive first half, Pope John came out for the third quarter and managed just six points.

At the other end of the court, the Cardinals put up 17 points, boosting their lead to 53 to 35.

The first half was a different story as the Crusaders played solid basketball against the 19-1 Cardinals. Pope John fell behind 19 to 9, then ran off 12 straight points to take a 21 to 19 lead. Leading the way were Jake Schindler and Josh Beckman who were hitting the mark from three-point range.
