RANDOLPH — On a night when the weather didn’t know what to do, the Elgin Public-Pope John Wolfpack wasted little time in establishing once again its’ dominance on the gridiron, defeating Randolph 36 to 0.
The sun tried to shine, the clouds tried to produce rain, but to no avail on this Friday night, the opening night of the football season. The Wolfpack, on the other hand, knew exactly what they wanted to do and did it despite some first-game jitters for a number of new starters.
On their first possession of the game the Wolfpack lit up the scoreboard when I-back Austin Heying took a pitch from quarterback Ross Schindler and went 39 yards. Most of that run had the Cardinals eyeing his backside as Heying ran away from the Cardinals’ tacklers with surprising ease.
Going into the season, the offense looked to be in good shape. But the Wolfpack defense had some question marks. How would they handle a bigger Cardinals’ offensive line? The answer, not a problem. Randolph showed little in the way of a running game, despite a significant size advantage up front. The Wolfpack held the Cardinals to a three-and-out on their first possession.
