EPPJ Golfers Open Season

NELIGH — Early April on the links in Nebraska can be a toss-up. Some days the weather will be ideal, then there are days when golf isn’t meant to be played. Elgin Public-Pope John lucked out last week as weather conditions were perfect for early spring high school golf.
On Thursday, the Wolfpack opened the 2014 season with a dual against Humphrey St. Francis at the Neligh golf course. Trevor Kosch shot a 36 over nine holes to help lead the Flyers to a 38-stroke victory over the Wolfpack, 166 to 204. The Wolfpack’s best score was turned in by two-time state tournament golfer Kyle Heithoff. Heithoff carded a 44 in his season debut. Teammate Regan Kerkman shot a 49. Other scores were Jack Borer 55, Evan Schindler 56 and Brandi Baker finished with a 68. Other scores for the Flyers were Michael Brockhaus 37, Jake Arlt 45, Cory Hassenstab 48 and Spencer Beller 50.
Saturday action
The Wolfpack returned to action Saturday, competing in a quadrangular tournament at Summerland Golf Course near Ewing.
Other schools were Ewing,Orchard/Clearwater and Elkhorn Valley.
The Cyclones, led by a 41 turned in by Aaron Hawf, won the team championship with a score of 192, followed by Ewing at 193, and the Wolfpack coming in with a score of 194.
The Wolfpack were again led in scoring by Heithoff who shot a nine-hole score of 42. Also breaking 50 on this day was freshman Chad Bode who finished with a 47. Other EPPJ scores were Miles Schrage 51, Regan Kerkman 54 and Jack Borer 58.
