Spaans Is New Community Center Director

There’s a new face in Elgin and she’s working at the Elgin Community Center.
Tina Spaans of rural Plainview is the new manager, having taken over duties from Becky Evans earlier this month.
The first thing you notice when you meet Tina is a distinctive accent. She grew up in South Dakota and moved to Nebraska from Minnesota not long ago.
She said while in Minnesota she worked as a part-time city clerk and it became her goal to find a position where she could again work with the public. Before taking the job in Elgin, Miss Spaans was working at the U.S. Post Office in O’Neill.
Looking at the community center, Miss Spaans said she wants to create more interest in the activities there.
“One of the things I want to do is get more people in the community center. It’s not just for seniors,” she said. Her goal is to develop some fundraising ideas which can benefit the center and the community.
The community center is known for activities during the day and good meals served over the noon hour. “It’s a great place to socialize,” she said.
Each day the community center offers a noon meal at a reasonable price for senior citizens. Persons wishing to dine at the center are encouraged to call and register by 9:30 a.m. so the cooks have an accurate head count.
In addition, for people who can’t get to the center, there is Meals On Wheels. All one has to do is call the center at (402) 843-5757 to schedule a meal to be delivered to their home.
Hours at the community center are 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
While work at the center will keep her busy, Miss Spaans is also working on another important event. She and fiancé Brian Carpenter of rural Plainview are planning an April wedding.
Welcome to Elgin Tina!
