Schmitt Sworn in as New Elgin Mayor

For 25 years, William Evans has served as mayor of Elgin. On Monday night, that changed.

Council President Mike Schmitt was sworn in as the new mayor of Elgin during the reorganization meeting of the Elgin City Council.

Both he and councilperson Shirley Nissen were sworn in by Police Chief Bob Moore.

One of his first acts as mayor was to ask Councilman Ken Jochum to continue to serve until a successor can be found for his seat in Ward II. Jochum, who did not seek re-election, agreed to do so, providing it didn’t take four years. The light-hearted remark made everyone chuckle.

In this issue of the newspaper, the City is running two public notices regarding vacancies on the city council. In Ward I, the city needs to fill the seat previously held by Schmitt for a two-year term. In Ward II, Jochum’s seat must be filled for a four-year term.
