Running of the Weiners Held in Grand Island

On September 19, Brenda Siems and Sadie attended the 10th annual Running of the Weiners at Platt Deutsch ballfield in Grand Island. This is an annual daschund race event where “the atmosphere is a cross between Memorial Stadium on game day, Fonner Park, and the Westminister Dog Show” (GI Independent 2002) The dogs are separated into Little Smokies, up to 1 year old, Frankfurters, 1-5 years, Senior Smokies, ages over 5, and a Special Olympic group. Sadie participated in, or in her case, chose not to participate, in a Frankfurter heat. She was overwhelmed by the big city atmosphere and spent most of race day sitting on someone’s lap.

The winning Frankfurter completed the 25 yd. race in about 5.5 seconds. 94 teams from Indiana, Wyoming, Colorado, Missouri, and many Nebraska communities were in attendance. A funfilled event we will attend next year.
