Olympic Gold Medalist Visits Schools in Elgin

An Olympic gold medalist was in Elgin Monday morning to inspire students to be the best they can be as citizens and competitors.

Nebraska’s own Curt Tomasevicz, a member of the four-man USA bobsled team which won gold in the 2010 Winter Olympics, spoke to students Monday morning at St. Boniface Gymnasium and also at Elgin Public Schools.

Tomasevicz is no stranger to small towns and Nebraska’s rural lifestyle. He grew up in Shelby, Nebraska, a small town of nearly 700 people located a few miles south and west of Columbus. He was one of 25 seniors who graduated from high school there, not much larger than some of the classes at Elgin and Pope John high schools. He said growing up he was like most kids, watching TV and playing video games. It was his mother who inspired him to do something active back then. Today, looking back, that was the push which culminated in gold at Vancouver.
