New Principal, Teacher Hired at District #18

On Thursday night, the District #18 Board of Education filled two open positions.

The board approved the hiring of Adam Patrick as principal/athletic director, replacing Jimmy Feeney III who had served in that capacity for the past two school years. Feeney resigned to accept a position at Boone Central Public Schools in Albion for the 2011-2012 school year.

This will mark the first administrative job for Patrick who will come to District #18 from Laurel where he has taught history, according to Superintendent Steve Dennis.

“I think he will be a good fit,” Dennis said. “He’s an energetic young person who I’m looking forward to working with.”

Dennis noted that 27 persons applied for the position and five were interviewed.

The only open teaching position was filled at Thursday night’s meeting. Amy Klein of Raeville was hired to fill the Spanish teaching position.

Another item which will affect district patrons is the 2011-2012 school calendar. The board approved the new calendar. It reflects 181 students days plus five teacher work days. The first day of classes at Elgin Public Schools will be Wednesday, August 17. Christmas vacation will be December 23-30. School will resume on Wednesday, January 4, 2012. Graduation will be held on May 12.

The time for graduation will change with the new school year. After surveying present sophomore and junior parents, the consensus was to change the starting time to 5 p.m.
