Mabel A. Wirges, 94, formerly of Petersburg, NE passed away Saturday, September 28, 2013 at the Linden Court nursing home in North Platte, NE.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, October 7, 2013 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Petersburg, NE, with Rev. Stan Schmit officiating. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. Huffman-Levander Funeral Home of Elgin was in charge of arrangements.

Mabel Agnes Wirges, daughter of John and Anna (Schwabe) Zwingman, was born December 15, 1918 at Petersburg, NE. She attended St. John’s Catholic School, Boone County District #51 and St. John Berchman’s Catholic School in Raeville, NE. Following school she helped her parents on the farm.
She married John Bernard Wirges on August 13, 1945 at St. Bonaventure Church in Raeville.
They farmed and raised livestock east of Petersburg until they moved into Petersburg in October 1982. In April 2003, they moved to Centennial Park in North Platte, NE. In 2009, she entered Linden Court in North Platte, and it was there that she passed away on September 28, 2013.
Mabel was a member of St. John the Baptist Church in Petersburg where she was a member of the Christian Mothers and also served as a Circle Leader.
Besides helping John farm, she also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, embroidery work and quilting. She also enjoyed quilting for other people. Her children and grandchildren will always remember her through the beautiful quilts, crocheted afghans and embroidered pieces that she made for them.
Mabel is survived by her children: Margaret “Meg” Kirkland of North Platte and Larry (Joanie) Wirges of Petersburg; seven grandchildren and three great-grandsons: Clint (Amy) Kirkland of Roca, NE; Debra (Eric) Houser, Austin and Tanner of Kearney; Amy (Brandon) Dorenbach, Brooke (DeMon) Wimes and Quentin; Shayna (James) Poulsen; Whitney Wirges, all of Lincoln; and Drew Wirges of Petersburg; two sisters: Esther Petsche and Dolores Majerus, both of Petersburg.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband John in 2003; son-in-law: Kraig Kirkland; two brothers-in-law: Lawrence Petsche and Edward Majerus.
