To put it in proper persecutive, less than eight months OR less than 34 weeks OR less than 238 days remain before Elgin becomes the center of the universe when the community celebrates its Quasquicentennial.
The Q125 Committee continues to meet and preparations continue to be made for the celebration which will be held June 20-22.
Family histories and photographs have been submitted for a Q125 History Book which will be printed in the very near future.
A deadline for submitting histories has passed and committee members are in the process of scanning photos and typing out histories for the history book.
Some men in the community, but not all, have begun to grow their Q125 beards.
For those men not wishing to look like their pioneer ancestors who settled the area, they may purchase ‘shaving permits’.
Seldom does a day go by at the newspaper office when a call or e-mail doesn’t come in from someone having a question regarding the celebration. In particular, when an event might be taking place.
With that in mind, here’s a tentative schedule for the celebration from information previously made public by the committee.
Friday, June 20
8:30 a.m. — Dedication/welcome heroes program at the cemetery north of Elgin
9 a.m. — A cemetery walk featuring presentations on some of Elgin’s historical figures
9:30 a.m. — Science and crafts projects at PJCC school building
10 a.m. — Set up for a three-day stint will be a Black Powder group on the CVA field near North Street
11 a.m. — Quilt display and art show at St. Boniface Catholic Church
11:30 a.m. — Old-time bank robbery
Noon — (Tentative) Trail ride coming from Neligh to arrive in Elgin
Noon — Lunch at the KC Hall
1 p.m. — Wedding dress style show in the air-conditioned EHS gymnasium
2 p.m. — Teenage Quiz Bowl at the ‘Q’ Center (between the Elgin Medical Clinic and CVA Hardware)
2:30 p.m. — Water fights
4 p.m. — ‘Around the World’ Food Court at the Q Center
6:30 p.m. — Official ‘Opening Ceremonies’ at the Q Center. Adjacent to the Q Center will be a beer garden for persons to enjoy. Later in the evening a free show featuring ‘Dueling Pianos’ sponsored by the Elgin Ko-ed Group (EKG). Also, the Elgin Community Club will be sponsoring the Richards Amusements carnival for all three nights of the celebration.
Saturday, June 21
7 a.m. — 5K Run/Walk.
10 a.m. — Kiddie Parade at the Elgin City Park
10 a.m. — Agriculture Celebration — Tractor Drive
11 a.m. — Young N’ Lively to sponsor inflatables at the park
Noon — Civil War Re-Enactment at Elgin City Park
1 p.m. — Texting competition for youth at the park. Later in the afternoon there will be kids races
1:30 p.m. — Live entertainment/pie social at the Community Center
3 p.m. — ‘Ball game’ featuring Elgin, Petersburg and Neligh town teams
7 p.m. — Elgin High School and St. Boniface High School alumni banquets
8 p.m. — Street dance featuring ‘The Dweebs’ sponsored by EKG
Sunday, June 22
7 a.m. — Annual Fly-In Breakfast at Koinzan Airport
9 a.m. — Community Worship Service
11 a.m. — Q125 Car Show/tractor show/semi-truck show
3 p.m. — Q125 Parade. Registration will begin at 1 p.m.
4:30 p.m. — ‘Sheltered Reality’ drum group to perform at Elgin City Park
5: 30 p.m. — Variety show at Elgin High School gymnasium (Time is tentative)
6 p.m. — Community BBQ
7:30 p.m. — Closing ceremonies
Dusk — EVFD fireworks display
