1915 – 2011

Leona E. Voorhies, 96, formerly of Elgin, NE passed away at the Papillion Manor in Papillion, NE.

Leona Eleanor Everhart, daughter of Chauncey and Olive (Meuret) Everhart, was born August 15, 1915 at Neligh, NE. She grew up in Orchard, NE, attended Orchard Public Schools and graduated in 1933. She attended Wayne State College and went on to teach school for five years.

On June 19, 1938, Leona was united in marriage to George Voorhies in Orchard, NE. The couple moved to Franklin, NE for a year and then to Fremont, NE until George was called into the service. Upon George returning from the service the couple bought the Elgin Review on October 13, 1947. They published the Review for 39 years before retiring and selling the news office in 1978. The couple continued living in Elgin and spending their winters in Arizona. Following the death of George in 1984, Leona continued living in Elgin until moving to Omaha 1995, then to an assisted living at Papillion, NE in 2005 before entering the Papillion Manor in November 2006.

Leona was a member of the United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her daughter: Marlene “Marty” Cameron of Papillion, NE; two grandchildren: Tracy A. Cameron and wife Jenny of Bozeman, MT; Teresa A. Schram and husband Charlie of Plattsmouth, NE; along with three great-grandchildren.

Leona was preceded in death by her parents; husband George in 1984; and one brother Harold Everhart.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, January 6, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Elgin, NE with Revs. Michael Davis and Rev. Ray Avidano officiating.

Interment will follow in the West Cedar Valley Cemetery in Elgin, NE.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Huffman-Levander Funeral Home in Elgin.
