LaVern Schrage of Salem, Oregan died peacefully in his sleep on the morning of May 23, 2013 at the age of 86.
He was born in 1927 in Raeville. His mother passed away when LaVern was only 25 days old, so his Dad and Aunt Kathryn raised him along with his older brother and sister. He attended school at St. Johns in Raeville until the eighth grade. Vern went to the U.S. Army just after the end of World War II, where he served as an MP. After receiving an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army and spending a few years back home in Nebraska, LaVern moved to Oregon where he met his future wife, Sally. LaVern got an “Instant family” when he married Sally in 1962, for she had two toddler daughters from a brief first marriage. To this union were born three more daughters. LaVern and Sally celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September 2012
LaVern was employed by View-Master/Tyco for 36 years.
Funeral services were on Wednesday, May 29, at St. Edwards Catholic Chuirch in Keizer, Oregon. LaVern was laid to rest with military honors at Williamette Natiional Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
LaVern is survived by his wife, Sally; daughters Kathy, Colleen, Darlene and Pauli; grandsons Michael, Daniel and Brian; and sister Viola Pelster of Elgin. LaVern was preceded in death by his eldest daughter, Jeannie and his brother Vet Schrage of Petersburg.
