LaVern C. “Toby” Jochum, 94 of Elgin, passed away Thursday, October 4, 2018 at Neligh Care and Rehab Center in Neligh. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, October 8, 2018 at St. Boniface Church in Elgin, with Rev. Kevin Vogel officiating. Committal services followed in the parish cemetery, with military rites by American Legion Post #229 and VFW Post #5816 of Elgin. Visitation was held from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday at the church, with a 6 p.m. wake service.

LaVern “Toby” Charles Jochum, son of Leo and Rose (Rotert) Jochum was born July 8, 1924 on the family farm west of Raeville, Nebraska. Toby passed away on October 4, 2018 at the Neligh Care and Rehab Center at the age of 94 years old. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Bonaventure Church in Raeville. He attended school at District 16, Sunny Side School and St. Bonaventure in Raeville.
Toby joined the army in May 1945, serving in World War II with the Military Police. After returning home he returned to farming and raising cattle and hogs up until his retirement. He was a member of the St. Bonaventure Church in Raeville. He served as a trustee and was on the Parish Council. He belonged to the American Legion Post 334 and Post 229 for 72 years, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Elgin. He was commissioned an admiral in the Navy by Norbert Theiman on this 80th birthday.
Toby loved being a farmer, so much you would consider his job his hobby. When he wasn’t farming, he loved to fish, go for drives and playing cards in several card clubs with friends.
On February 3, 1948, Toby married LuVerna Heithoff. They shared the same anniversary as Toby’s parents and grandparents. To this union, five children were born: Ron, Linda, Dave, Sharon and Sandi.
Toby was a proud grandparent to six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Toby and LuVerna celebrated 65 years of marriage.
Survivors include sons and son-in-law: Ron Jochum of Lincoln, Roger Dinslage of Omaha; Dave (Pam) Jochum of Elgin; daughters: Sharon of Omaha; Sandi (Shonn) Marker of Kearney. He is also survived by grandchildren and great grandchildren: Jarid, Heather, Amanda, Ann, Brittney, Lauren, Alex, Ashley, Jasmin, Andrew, Anthony, Brooklyn, Aubrey, Aaron, and Riley; brothers: Leo (June) Jochum of Norfolk; Darrell (Lynn) of St. Joseph, Missouri; brother-in-laws: Delbert (Avis) Heithoff and Harold Heithoff; along with several nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. He was proceeded in death by his wife, LuVerna; daughter Linda; parents Leo and Rose Jochum; brothers Delmar and James; parents-in-law Rudy and Theresa Heithoff; sisters-in-law: Donna Stuhr, Myra Heithoff, Vera Heithoff, Delores Pelster; brother-in-law Joe Pelster, and niece Janet Abler.
