John B. Hoefer, 89, formerly of Elgin, NE passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at the Homestead Assisted Living in Norfolk, NE.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Oct. 15, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin, NE, with Reverend Ross Burkhalter officiating. Interment followed at St. Boniface Cemetery.

John Bernard Hoefer, son of Russell and Catherine (Kerkman) Hoefer, was born January 8, 1923 at Elgin, NE. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Church in Elgin, attended St. Boniface Grade School, and graduated from St. Boniface High School in 1941. He farmed with his father until entering the US Army on June 28, 1944. He served in the Southwest Pacific Theater of WWII and was honorably discharged on May 13, 1946.
John was united in marriage with Irma Irene Leibel on January 2, 1948 at Wayne, NE. The couple made their home near Elgin, NE where John continued farming until 1967, at which time he began working for Farmers Cooperative Exchange as Grain Division Manager, until retiring in February 1987.
He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, American Legion Post #229, VFW Post #5816, and past president of the Elgin Library Board.
John enjoyed reading, supporting Elgin’s high schools sports teams, spending time with his grandchildren and attending their activities.
Survivors include two daughters: Janice (Donald) Mollhoff of Tilden; Judy (Michael) Joy of Norfolk; five grandchildren: Jennifer (Brandon) Rystrom of Tilden; April (Marcus) Taege of Olathe, KS; Amber (Scott) Greiner of Randolph; Benjamin (Amy) Mollhoff of Boone, IA; Jill (Scott) Junck of Randolph; three step-grandchildren: Jennifer Synovec, Kevin Joy and Michelle Joy, all of Lincoln; 15 great-grandchildren; 4 step-great-grandchildren; one brother: Paul (Charolette) Hoefer of Elgin, NE; three sisters: Margie Baum of Elgin; Regina Smith of Germantown, WI; Lois (Bill) Williams of Sun Lakes, AZ; sister-in-law: Juan Hoefer of Elgin; brother-in-law: Bob Medcalf of Neligh; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents; wife Irma in 2000; a sister: Mary Kay Medcalf; a brother: Leonard Hoefer; and a brother-in-law: Roman Baum.
