Others will be Friday, Sept. 11 the collection will be in Laurel at their recycling center from 3 – 5 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 12 Creighton will be collecting at their recycling center east of town from 8 – 10 a.m.
These collection events are for households only, no businesses. Participants will be asked for a small fee to help with the cost of the project. These are also being funded in part by a grant from the Nebraska Environmental Trust.
Leftover household products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable, or reactive ingredients are considered to be household hazardous waste (HHW). Products, such as paints, cleaners, oils, batteries, and pesticides that contain potentially hazardous ingredients require special care when disposed of. Red Willow County Household Hazardous Waste is the contractor for these events and is well-versed in the proper landing and disposal of these materials.  Some items brought in may be available for recycling or reuse to those who have need of them.
The benefits of proper disposal or recycling of HHW are many.  By reducing and recycling natural resources and energy are saved.  Reuse of hazardous household products can save money and reduce the need for keeping hazardous substances around homes and properties.
And proper disposal prevents pollution that could harm humans, pets, and the environment.
