Helen Jean Huffman

1921 – 2010

Helen Jean Huffman (Elam) was born in 1921 in Falls City, Neb. She graduated from Falls City High School and attended the University of Nebraska where she met Stanley Huffman.  They married in Falls City on Dec. 19, 1942, and lived in Lincoln, Neb., for a brief period of time before the ROTC was activated. After Stanley returned from military duty they returned to Elgin, Neb., to the Huffman Ranch in Wheeler County. In 1961 they purchased the Carver Ranch 30 miles north of Whitman, Neb. The ranch was the center of many community activities, NCHA cuttings, Memorial Day Old-Timers Ropings, Huffman Ranch Horse Sales. The ranch was the home of the Round Lake Ropers. Jean often hosted parties and entertained guests and was always ready with a plate of cookies when anyone stopped by. She enjoyed a good game of bridge, classical music and playing the piano.

Jean was a member of the Eastern Star and a lifetime member of the Auxiliary at the American Legion Post in Elgin, Neb. She is preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Huffman, mother, Mabel Mary Pearson, father, August Earl Elam and brother, Frank Elam of Texas.

Survivors include her daughters Zoe Ann Huffman of Whitman, Becky (Emmanuel) Akporiaye of Portland, Ore.; three grandchildren, Gabe (Katie) Huffman, Nicole Akporiaye of Minneapolis, Minn., and Alicia Akporiaye of Brisbane, Australia and two great grandchildren, Braden and Chase.
