Hazardous Waste Collection Day to be Held May 11

A household hazardous collection day will be held in Elgin on Friday, May 11.
The event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the lot just north of the Elgin Livestock sale barn.
Elgin residents are encouraged to bring their household hazardous waste to this event. However, according to organizers, business are not allowed to participate in this event.
Materials which will be accepted on that day are paint and paint-related materials such as stains, varnish, etc.; poisons, fertilizers, mercury and mercury[related materials; fluorescent bulbs, pesticides and banned materials such as chlordane, DDT.
Computers will also be accepted (two per family for free. Any more will be 30 cents per pound.
Lead acid batteries will also be accepted at the event.
New this time around. unwanted/expired prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications can also be brought to the collection site.
Among the items which will not be accepted are tires, antifreeze as well as containers larger than five gallons.
Anyone having questions about the event or items which are acceptable or not acceptable, should contact City Hall.
Sponsoring this year’s event is the City of Elgin as well as the Antelope County Sheriff’s Department.
Cleanup Day
One day later, on Saturday, May 12, the Elgin Community Club will again hold their ‘cleanup day’ in Elgin.
With assistance from the City of Elgin, club members will collect items to be taken to commercial dumpsters. Cleanup activities will run from 9 a.m. to noon. Residents are encouraged to have their items placed on the curb no later than 8 a.m. in order to guarantee that it will be picked up.
The City of Elgin will again place commercial dumpsters on the lot north of the Elgin Livestock sale barn which will be accessible throughout the weekend.
