Gladys E. Bennett, 94 of Elgin, NE passed away Monday, August 20, 2018 at the Boone County Health Center in Albion.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 25, 2018 at St. Boniface Church in Elgin, with Rev. Kevin Vogel officiating. Committal services will follow at St. Boniface Cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, at the church, with a 7 p.m. wake service.

Gladys Eleanor Bennett, daughter of Charles H. and Ruth L. (Huston) Bennett, was born September 16, 1923 in Antelope County, NE. She was raised mostly on farms in the area of Clearwater and Neligh. She graduated from Neligh High School in 1941. She met Leonard Bennett the summer of 1940. She went on to cosmetology school at Bonnell Beauty College in Hastings, NE. World War II broke out and she went to Lockheed in California and helped to build the P38’s as “Rosie the Riveter.”
On October 16, 1943, Gladys married Leonard Bennett in Selma, AL where he was stationed. When Leonard got out of the service they decided to raise their family in Elgin.
She was a Cub Scout leader, a 4-H leader, co-founder of Hobby Club and Cancer chairman in the Elgin vicinity. She was a housewife and mother. Her most important job and precious memories were of raising her four wonderful children, watching them grow and raise her wonderful grandchildren.
Gladys enjoyed fishing and camping with her family. She had a love of walleye and growing her roses and lilacs.
She is survived by her four children: Richard (Lana) Bennett of Elwood, NE; Diane (Ron) Connick of Sutherland, NE; Jolene (Paul) Schrage of Elgin, NE; Mary (Bill) Kaczor of Ewing, NE; 13 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Ruth Bennett; husband Leonard in 2006; sisters: Dorothy Tinsley, Lena Miller, Darlene Dietz; brother Charles Bennett.
