Described by some as the ‘Flood of the Century’ persons and communities along the Elkhorn River from Ewing to Clearwater to Neligh and on east are slowly beginning to clean up the damage left in its’ wake.
The flood claimed one life, threatened many others during the course of the past week.
A man with ties to the Elgin/Petersburg communities died when a railroad bridge collapsed Tuesday afternoon, June 15 as flood waters were rolling through Norfolk.
Thirty-eight year-old Jeff Scholl, a resident of Norfolk who grew up near Petersburg, was one of three Nebraska Central Railroad workers who fell into the Elkhorn River when a steel bridge they were inspecting collapsed southwest of Norfolk. Two of the three men were rescued, but Scholl’s body disappeared under the water.
