Vetch Days Celebration Starts This Weekend

So much to do, so much to see, the annual Vetch Days celebration will be held Monday through Wednesday, June 27-29.

The theme for this year is Vetchstock — Three Days of Peace, Love & Vetch. This year’s celebration will have a 1960s feel to it as Elgin builds towards their Q125 Celebration to be held in 2014.

Richard’s Amusements will be here all three evenings. Carnival tickets are now on sale at City Limits, The Station, Elgin One Stop and Dean’s Market.

Several activities get underway on Saturday, June 25. The community’s annual garage sales will be held, beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing the remainder of the day. Also on that day, mud volleyball will be played, beginning at 10:30 a.m., on the lot south of Corner Service.

Saturday evening the attention will turn to remembering past accomplishments at Elgin and St. Boniface High Schools. Alumni banquets will be held at locations around town.

Scheduled for Sunday, June 26, are two activities. FCCLA members will hold a pancake feed from 9 a.m. to noon at the Elgin High School lunch room. That evening, bingo will be played at the KC Hall, starting at 7 p.m.

Vetch Days formally begins Monday, June 27, with water fights for young and the young at heart. They will be held east of the fire hall.

The Elgin Public Library will hold a living book presentation event at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, June 27, as part of the Vetch Days celebration. It will be held at ‘Vetchville’ located between City Hall and Huffman-Levander Funeral Home.

The Elgin Community Center will be serving ‘walking tacos’ and ‘sloppy joes’ from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. All are invited to attend. Vetchville will be the starting point for a ‘Poker Walk’ beginning at 7 p.m.

Kid’s karaoke will be held at Boomerang’s from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Adult karaoke will begin at Boomerang’s at 9 p.m.

Tuesday activities begin with a pool party from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Elgin City Pool. Kid’s races are scheduled for Elgin City Park, starting at 4 p.m. A Kid’s Parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. Participants will begin to lineup at 6 p.m. behind Jerry’s Feed. The Grand Parade will start at 7 p.m. Lineup will begin at 6 p.m. at Elgin City Park. Due to a decision by the Nebraska Department of Roads, the parade route has been changed The route will begin at the park and go west to Third Street, then turn south and finish at Bowen Street. City Clerk Vicki Miller said parking along Third Street is prohibited during the parade. During and following the parade, an ice cream social will be held at the Fire Hall sponsored by the Q125 Committee. Throughout the remainder of the evening will be a ‘cruise night.’ At Boomerangs, beginning at 8 p.m., will be live music featuring Kelly DeVault. He will be playing till midnight.

Wednesday activities will begin at 3 p.m. with a Kid’s Scavenger Hunt starting at the park. Sand volleyball will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the park. Sign-up at Boomerang’s.

The annual Community BBQ will be at the KC Hall from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Free will donations will be accepted. An EMT Blood Pressure/Sugar Clinic will be in front of the KC Hall. An Adult Scavenger Hunt will begin at 8 p.m. at the Steel Steed.

Starting at 9 p.m. and going till midnight at the Steel Steed, there will be live music by Corey, Mark & Tom.
