EPS Hires Two New Teachers

Meeting last week, the District #18 Board of Education took steps to insure they will be fully staffed with teachers for the 2017/2018 school year.
First, the board offered contracts to all teachers currently on staff for the coming school year. March is the month when the school board takes the step to insure teachers of jobs for the coming year.
Then, later in the meeting, the board voted unanimously to hire two new teachers to fill vacancies which arose with resignations made at last month’s meeting.
The board approved the hiring of Trey Rossman from Atkinson to fill the role of high school social studies teacher, replacing Wes Prater who resigned to accept a similar position at Elkhorn Valley. Altogether, 23 persons applied for the position, K-12 Principal Greg Wemhoff said.
The vacancy created by the resignation of Taylor Spiegel earlier this year was filled with the hiring of Mackenzie Cooper of Orchard. Wemhoff said 21 applications were received for the position.
Both will be first year teachers.
Board President Steve Heithoff said he was happy with the number of applicants the school district received to fill the two openings.
On another matter, the board approved a salary for K-12 Principal Wemhoff. Having approved a contract for Wemhoff at the February meeting, the board voted 6-0 to give Wemhoff a two percent increase in salary for the 2017/2018 school year.
Heithoff said, on behalf of the school district, the board appreciates all he has done for the school since coming to Elgin several years ago.
