EPS to add practice track

The District #18 Board of Education met Wednesday night and took action which, in the coming years, should be an asset to school-age students as well as the public.
On a unanimous 6-0 vote, the board approved construction of a four-lane 400-meter asphalt track to be placed around the practice field west of Elgin Field. Excluding necessary dirt work and a chute, the asphalt track will cost just over $54,000.
The track was part of a proposed walking path presented to the board several months ago by Superintendent Dan Polk. While the rest of the walking path, originally to be 1.24 miles in length, was not discussed, it’s possible sections could be added in coming years.
On another matter involving nearby Elgin Field, the board approved purchasing materials for construction of a new crow’s nest to be located behind the bleachers on the west side of Elgin Field.
The board expressed their appreciation to Schmitt Construction who offered to construct the new nest free of charge as long as the school district paid for all materials estimated to be just over $10,500.
