EPPJ Girls Win Holiday Tournament

ELGIN — Call them ‘Champions!’
Elgin Public-Pope John defeated Burwell 54 to 50 in the girls championship game of the Wolfpack Holiday Basketball Tournament Friday night.
The Wolfpack (7-2) took control of the game late in the fourth quarter to secure the victory and boost their record to 7-2. While the Wolfpack won the game, Burwell made them earn it.
The Wolfpack took the lead for good when Baylee Wemhoff made a trey to make the score 46 to 44 with 2:44 left in the game. The trey sparked an 8 to 0 run which built the lead up to seven points, 41 to 44, with just under a minute to play. After Wemhoff’s trey, senior post player Stephanie Bode stepped outside and made a trey and Madison Voborny added a basket.
Burwell, to their credit, fought back. Two treys by McKenna McClintic pulled Burwell to within three points twice in the game’s final minute. Wemhoff made a free throw with 18 seconds to provide the final margin of victory.
