O’NEILL — Once-beaten Burwell broke open a close game in the third quarter and went on to defeat Elgin Public-Pope John 61 to 39 in sub-district final action played at O’Neill High School Thursday night.
The Wolfpack fell behind early against the Longhorns, trailing by eight points after one quarter. However, they played better in the second quarter and trailed 29 to 20 at halftime as Burwell struggled for a time in this physical game.
To their credit, the Longhorns came out the third quarter and took control of the game. They limited the Wolfpack to just two points in the quarter. At the other end of the floor, Blake Jeffries & Co. were having their way. In the third quarter the Longhorns outscored the Wolfpack 20 to 2 to take a 49 to 22 lead.
