Elgin Eagles
SPALDING — Four proved to be a favorite number of the Elgin Eagles Friday night.
The Eagles collected their fourth victory of the season by scoring 44 points in the first quarter en route to a 58 to 6 victory over the Spalding/Spalding Academy Knights.

BARTLETT — The Elgin Lady Eagles dropped a pair of matches Tuesday night, Sept. 23, at the Old Sandhills Gateway Quadrangular Volleyball Tournament. Elgin opened tournament play with a 25-22, 11-25 and 14-25 loss to Wheeler Central. In the consolation finals, Clearwater defeated Elgin 25-20 and 25-23.
CEDAR RAPIDS — Elgin split a pair of matches Thursday night, defeating Newman Grove and losing to Cedar Rapids. In the opening match, Elgin easily won the first game, then outlasted Newman Grove in the second game to win 25-17 and 27-25. In their other match of the night, Elgin won the first game, then dropped the next two to fall to Cedar Rapids 25-23, 21-25 and 20-25.

Pope John Central Catholic
ELGIN — Having handily defeated Ewing in the season opener one year ago, Pope John Central Catholic learned a painful lesson Friday night: Winning streaks don’t last forever. Last year’s D-1 state champions, Pope John saw their 15-game winning streak come to an end as the Tigers defeated the Crusaders 30 to 14. The loss dropped Pope John’s record to 3-1 heading into this week’s matchup against D-2 top-ranked Elgin High.

ELGIN — For the second time this season, Pope John battled top-ranked Ewing. Unfortunately for the Lady Crusaders and their fans, the results were the same as earlier this year.
Hayley Thramer and Abbey Schueth combined for 39 kills at the net to lead the Lady Tigers to a 25-17, 25-17 and 25-17 victory over Pope John. The loss dropped Elgin’s record to 9-5.
