Elgin Review Wins Nine Awards at NPA ‘Better Newspaper Contest’

LINCOLN — The Elgin Review newspaper was the recipient of nine awards at the 2012 Better Newspaper Contest.
The awards were handed out at the Saturday night banquet at the annual convention of the Nebraska Press Association. More than 300 persons attended the banquet held at the Holiday Inn just blocks away from Memorial Stadium.
The newspaper, owned by Dennis and Lynell Morgan, received five first place awards, three second place awards and one third place awards in categories judged by members of the Alabama Press Association.
First place were received in the following categories: Public Notice and its promotion, Building Circulation, Signature Page, Photo Page and Feature Photography.
Second place awards were for: Small Ad under 1/4 of a page, Feature Photography and Sports Action Photo
The third place award was for feature photography.
The Review achieved the rare feat of having the top three entries in feature photography. Taking first place was a photo of the Wolfpack dance team performing at halftime. Judges described the winning photo as a “Dynamic image, well-cropped with all the names in the paper.” The second place photo was of Lexie Heithoff with her horse at the Antelope County Fair. “The eyes make the picture,” the judge said. The third place photo was of Olivia and her father Martin Klein on the first day of school. “The photographer captured the emotion of the first day of school. Good shot!”
