After their successful Valentine’s Day cabaret, The Candy Project Theatre Company, whose members include Elgin natives Amanda and Katie Miller, will present the musical comedy “I Love You Because” for two weekends in August.
Set in New York City, “I Love You Because” follows Austin Bennet (played by Andy King), a young greeting card writer whose life is turned upside down when he finds his long-term girlfriend Catherine in bed with another man. Forced back out into the treacherous New York dating scene, Austin meets Marcy Fitzwilliams (Cathy Hirsch), a flighty photographer whose spontaneity is matched only by her ability to drive him insane. Austin and Marcy’s romance follows a roller coaster of ups and downs, as does the hilarious relationship of their best friends, Jeff (Dan Chevalier) and Diana (Amanda Miller). Katie Miller and Joey Galda complete the cast of 6. This new musical comedy explores the ‘rules’ and nuances of dating and learning how to love someone, not in spite of their differences, but because of them.
A modern day musical re-telling of Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice with the genders reversed, the show features songs such as “Another Saturday Night in New York,” “The Actuary Song,” “Maybe We Just Made Love,” “We’re Just Friends,” and the titular track, “I Love You Because.”
The musical is set for a 6-show run at the Pizza Shoppe Collective, located in the heart of downtown Benson (6056 Maple Street) from August 7th – 16th. Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm, Sunday’s show time is 1:00 pm.
