Elgin FCCLA Returns Home With ‘Gold’

The Elgin FCCLA chapter was successfully represented at this year’s FCCLA National Leadership Conference.
More than 7,500 nationwide members, advisers, alumni, and guests of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), gathered in San Antonio, Texas, July 6-10 for the 2014 conference. Stephanie Bode, Madison Voborny, Sharla Schindler, Austin Miller, Dylan Widger – members of the Elgin Public FCCLA and their adviser Barb Bode – were among them.
This year’s theme for the annual national meeting was “SOAR With FCCLA”
According to advisor Barb Bode, students were kept busy. “Students attended Leadership Academy sessions, youth sessions related to social media and traffic safety, as well as exhibits and networking with other FCCLA members from across the country”, she shared. A highlight of the convention was keynote speaker, Consuello Castillo-Kickbush.  Her message focused on “Servant Leadership: A New Call to Duty”.
The students also participated in the STAR event competition.
These competitive events are designed to build proficiency and achievement in leadership and job-related skills.
Stephanie, Madi and Sharla presented their project on Interpersonal Communication-Senior,  receiving gold medals.  Austin and Dylan participated in Life Event Planning-Senior and also earned gold medals.
The group also took part in FCCLA sponsored tours of San Antonio giving them the opportunity to experience the culture and people of the San Antonio region. This year marked the first year that the chapter has qualified students to attend the National Conference.
