Eischeid Buzzer Beater Tops Warriors, Wolfpack Finish 2nd At Tourney

ELGIN — Let’s call it ‘The Shot.’
As long as there are basketball games between Elgin and Neligh-Oakdale, Jake Eischeid’s two-point winning basket at the buzzer will always be remembered.
Eischeid’s 15-footer as time expired gave the Wolfpack a 58 to 56 come-from-behind victory over the Warriors in the opening round of the Wolfpack Holiday Basketball Tournament played at St. Boniface gymnasium.
Ahead by three points, 56 to 53 with a minute left to play, the Warriors were in control of the game. Twice, the Wolfpack called timeout trying to find a play which might work against the Warriors’ defense. EPPJ cut the deficit to two points when Eischeid made the second of two free throws with 31 seconds left. Then, the Wolfpack made some breaks of their own which decided the game.
The Warriors’ in-bounds pass after Eischeid’s free throw hit the bottom of the backboard and bounced into the hands of junior Jack Borer who scored to tie the game at 56-all with 27 seconds left.
Neligh-Oakdale then brought the ball up court intent on taking the last shot. But, the referee’s whistle changed everything as a Warriors’ player was called for traveling, turning the ball over to the Wolfpack.
Coach Scott Becker then put the ball in the hands of 5’8” playmaker Eischeid who worked his way to the left edge of the free throw line and let go of a shot with two seconds left on the clock. The ball swished through the bottom of the net as the final buzzer sounded.
