Delbert Herman Niewohner, son of Herman and Hannah (Werner) Niewohner, was born December 8, 1927 at Norfolk, NE. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, attended grade school at Norfolk Public Schools and graduated from Norfolk High School in 1946. He farmed with his father, along with working at a lumberyard, before entering the United States Army in 1950. He was deployed to Korea where he served in an engineering division responsible for rebuilding bridges and roads, until being honorably discharged in 1952.
Delbert returned home to the Norfolk area briefly, before moving to Albion, NE where he acquired land and resumed farming. On December 26, 1953, he was united in marriage to Marilee Gallion at Chester, NE. They made their home on the farm northeast of Albion, NE where they farmed, raised livestock and were blessed with five children: Jerry, Linda, Steve, Mark and Matt. With the help of their family over the years, Delbert and Marilee expanded the operation from their initial quarter of farm ground to what it is today.
Delbert’s passion was farming and cattle. If he wasn’t at the farm, he was at a cattle sale, or driving around checking progress of the operation. He did enjoy spending family time boating or taking vacations, and in later years, having all of his family join him at the Cattleman’s Balls. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, served on the church council and belonged to Lutheran Brotherhood. He was also a member of several cattleman’s associations.
He is survived by his wife Marilee of Albion, NE; five children: Jerry (Karen) Niewohner of Albion, NE; Linda Spiegel of Albion, NE; Steve (Jane) Niewohner of Elgin, NE; Mark (Jana) Niewohner of Albion, NE; Matt (Tiffany) Niewohner of Petersburg, NE; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren (with one on the way); two sisters: Marion (Walter “Lefty”) Tinius and JoAnn Tiedgen of Norfolk, NE; brother-in-law David Gallion of Grand Island, NE; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Delbert was preceded in death by his parents Herman and Hannah; a sister Dorothy (Marvin) Nenow; two brothers-in-law: Dick Tiedgen and Larry Gallion; sister-in-law Gloria Gallion; and son-in-law Dave Spiegel.
