Debate Intense on Proposed State Budget

By Kate Sullivan
District #41 State Senator
With the 14 business days that remain in this legislative session, you might say that we’re in the home stretch.  There is much to accomplish before we can adjourn mid-April so beginning March 20, floor debate will start at 8 a.m. and continue into the evening.
We started and ended the week with debate on the state budget. State revenue has been scarce the last four years. This is the first time since I’ve been your senator that we haven’t focused solely on substantial cuts to state programs.
Debate has been intense because we know our decisions impact all Nebraskans.  We care deeply about how state government is funded and what we actually fund whether it’s state aid to schools; paying foster care providers short-changed during the failed child welfare privatization effort; a tax cut and the size of the tax cut; and how these decisions impact the state in future years.
