Delbert J. Schumacher, 88, of Wabasha, Minn., died Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at St. Elizabeth’s Health Care Center in Wabasha.
He was born March 2, 1925, at home in Petersburg, NE, the son of George and Lucy (Leibel) Schumacher. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He married Charlotte Bennett June 4, 1946, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin, NE. Delbert was a dairy farmer. The family moved to Dumfries, rural Wabasha, in 1957 where he continued his farming practice. He and Charlotte moved into Wabasha in 1998 when he retired.
Delbert was a member of St. Felix Catholic Church and a member of St. Joseph’s Society of Catholic United Financial. He was also a 60-year member of the American Legion, his last several years as a member of the Wabasha American Legion Post #50. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and especially spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Schumacher; Wabasha; children and their spouses, Sharon and Denis LaComb, Apple Valley, Roger and Kathy Schumacher, Eden Prairie, Marla and John Simmet, Woodbury, and Wayne and Barb Schumacher, New Richmond, Wis.; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters.
A funeral Mass was held Saturday, June 29, at St. Felix Catholic Church in Wabasha, with the Rev. Joseph LaPlante and Deacon John Hust officiating. Interment followed in St. Felix Cemetery.
Casket bearers were his grandsons, Rob and Steve Poppovich, Justin Schumacher, Adam, Paul and Noah Simmet, Brian LaComb and Andy and Matt Schumacher.
