Bernard L. Ruther, 83 of Petersburg, NE passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at Heritage of Bel Air in Norfolk, NE.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday at St. John the Baptist Church in Petersburg, with Rev. Stan Schmit officiating.
Interment followed in the parish cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post 334 of Petersburg, NE. Huffman-Levander Funeral Home of Elgin was in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.huffmanlevander.com.

Bernard Lee Ruther, son of Thomas and Effie (Vaught) Ruther, was born January 6, 1930 at home in Petersburg, NE. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John the Baptist Church in Petersburg, attended St. John’s Catholic School in Petersburg and graduated from Petersburg High School with the class of 1948. He worked at Andre’s store until joining the Army in 1950. He served in Korea with the 24th Division until receiving a Honorable Discharge in October of 1953, and returned to Petersburg where he was again employed at Andre’s Store.
On June 9, 1959, Bernard married Kathleen M. Roth at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin, NE. The couple made their home in Petersburg where Bernard continued to work at Andre’s Store, and eventually became joint-owner. He retired on December 31, 1993 after 43 years.
Bernard was a life-long member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and a member of the Petersburg American Legion and VFW for over 50 years. He a member of the Petersburg Commercial Club, Fire Department, Village Board and served as the Mayor.
He is survived by his wife Kathleen of Norfolk, NE; two sons: Zane Ruther of Norfolk, NE; Tom Ruther of Cedar Rapids, IA; 5 grandchildren: Jeff, Candice, Sheena, Austyn Joy and Brady; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Bernard was preceded in death by his parents; his brother: David Ruther and wife Helen.
