Bernadette Marie Jewell, daughter of Michael Penne and Mayme (Rotert) Penne was born February 1, 1919 in Stratton, Colorado.
She passed away May 14, 2015 at Golden Living Center in Valley, Nebraska, at the age of 96.
Bernadette was united in marriage to Marshall Clifton Jewell on September 22, 1941 at Sacred Heart Church in Norfolk, Nebraska.
Their marriage was blessed with two sons, Charles C. and Donn R. Jewell.
Bernadette was a devoted mother and homemaker, and also worked as a waitress for many years at Banker’s Life and Gino’s Restaurant, both in Des Moines, Iowa.
After Marshall’s death in 1970, Bernadette moved to Elgin, Nebraska to help her sisters care for their mother and father. While living in Elgin she worked at Imperial Steakhouse in Neligh, Nebraska, remaining in Elgin with her sisters for 31 years.
In April of 2001, Bernadette returned to Des Moines to their family home, where she lived until moving to Houston, Texas with her son and family in 2010.
A lifelong Catholic, Bernadette was a member of All Saints Catholic Church in Des Moines as well as St. Boniface Church in Elgin.
Preceding Bernadette in death were her parents; husband, Marshall Jewell; sisters Lorraine Lynch, and Ione Hausmann, brother Gilbert Penne, sister-in-law Monica Penne and brothers-in-law Jim Lynch and Leo Hausmann.
Bernadette is survived by her children Charles C. Jewell (Jane) of Houston, Texas, and Donn R. Jewell (Gayle) of Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren Chad Jewell (Velissa), Brice Jewell (Kimberly) Cole Jewell, and Angela Schramm (Clint); and great-grandchildren Adam Jewell, Abby Jewell, Vanden Jewell, Dax Jewell, Alayna Schramm and Lucy Schramm, as well as her brother, John Penne, and a host of loving nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral mass will be Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 10 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Valley, Nebraska. Interment will be at Graceland Cemetery in Blencoe, Iowa.
Visitation will be Friday from Noon to 7 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m., and a wake service at 7 p.m. at Reichmuth Funeral Home in Elkhorn. Memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association.
