Benjamin J. Koenig, 85 of Elgin, NE passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at the Golden Living Center in Neligh, NE.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin, NE with Rev. Ross Burkhalter officiating. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. Benjamin James Koenig, son of Louis A. and Mary (Rosno) Koenig, was born June 20, 1926 on the family farm northwest of Elgin, NE. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Church. He attended the Sheldon School District #148 until 1941 and graduated from St. Boniface High School in May 1943.
In 1944, he was employed at the Stringfellow Service Station as an attendant.
In 1946, he began farming in the Antelope Creek vicinity.
In April 1950, Ben was united in marriage to Regina Eischeid at St. Boniface Church in Elgin, NE. They lived on several farms in the area until moving to the Koenig family farm in 1979, where they lived, farmed and raised cattle and hogs until retiring and moving to town in 1991.
Ben was a lifelong member of St. Boniface Church in Elgin. He was interested and involved in education, serving on Sheldon District #148, St. Boniface and Pope John School Boards, along with being a deanery representative on the Archdiocese of Omaha Board of Education for six years. He also served on the board of directors of the Farmers Cooperative Exchange at Elgin.
Ben is survived by his wife Jean of Elgin; sons: Bob (Karen) Koenig of Elgin, NE and Joe (Lisa) Koenig of Raleigh, NC; daughters: Carol (Doug) Smith of Griswold, IA; Linda Koenig of Oklahoma City, OK; Betty (John) Dine of Omaha, NE; Mary (Jeff) Bohning of Seward, NE; 13 grandchildren: Melissa Smith of Syracuse, NY; Mary Helen Smith of Denver, CO; Mitchell (Erica) Smith of Cedar Falls, IA; Laura (Cody) Adams of Dallas, TX; Nathan Dine of Phoenix, AZ; Stephanie Dine of Omaha, NE; Melodie (Justin) Puffer of Roseville, CA; Shanna Koenig of Mission Viejo, CA; Allison Koenig of Elgin, NE; Arianna Bohning of Seward, NE; Elise Bohning of Seward, NE; Adam Koenig of Raleigh, NC; Ana Koenig of Raleigh, NC; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Mary; brothers Leo and Bill; and a sister Lucile.
