Angela Katherine Meis, daughter of Henry and Emma (McLean) Vanderheiden, was born May 15, 1917 in Elgin. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Church in Elgin, and attended St. Boniface School and graduated from Elgin Public High School in 1935, where she was one of the girls to receive a varsity letter in women’s basketball.
Following graduation, she kept busy as a seamstress for relatives and caring for nieces and nephews.
On October 16, 1940, Angela married Herman A. Meis at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin. The couple lived on a ranch west of Neligh until it was sold in 1942.
They lived for a year west Norfolk, before returning to the Elgin area where they bought a farm in the Star Community. They lived and farmed there for 17 years before purchasing and moving to a farm southwest of Elgin in 1960. They retired from farming in 1974, and moved to town in 1989.
Herman passed away in 2003, and Angela continued living in Elgin until entering the Samaritan Estates Assisted Living in Albion in November 2012.
Angela was a member of St. Boniface Church, St. Boniface Christian Mothers, Star Ladies Club, and later, the Red Hatters.
She enjoyed gardening, growing lots of flowers, canning, teaching herself to play the organ, and most of all having tea parties with her grandchildren.
Angela is survived by her three children: Mary Kay (Gerald) Henn of Grand Island, NE; Charlie (Pamela) Meis of Albion, NE; Susan (Kim) Pope of Lincoln, NE; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law: Sally Meis of Petersburg, NE; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
