Wolfpack Girls Win Howells Tourney

HOWELLS — Elgin Public-Pope John took on all challengers and claimed three victories at a tournament Saturday hosted by Howells-Dodge High School.
The Wolfpack opened tournament play against Howells Dodge. After winning the first game 25 to 21, the Wolfpack dropped the second game 25 to 19. In the decisive third game, the Wolfpack won the big points to claim the game 25 to 23, and the match by a score of two games to one.
Sophomore Liz Selting led the Wolfpack, recording 12 of the team’s 34 kills in the match. Jenna Parks added nine, followed by Terri Seier with six, Hayley Stamp added three while Taylor Schumacher and Nikki Beckman each had two. Baylee Wemhoff and Parks each had 12 set assists in the match, Beckman had three and Seier added one.
Three players were in double figures in serve receive. Sharla Schindler led the way with 15, Jordan Mescher had 12 and Selting contributed 11.
Selting led the team with two ace serves in the match, Mescher added one as did Schindler.
At the net, Parks and Seier were each credited with two ace blocks.
The Wolfpack had 42 digs in the match, led by Schindler with 11, Parks had nine, Selting had eight followed by Schumacher with six, Mescher five, Wemhoff two and Stamp one.
Burwell
Next up for the Wolfpack was Burwell. This time the Wolfpack prevailed in two games, 25-22 and 25-19.
The Wolfpack served well in the match, producing seven ace serves. Schumacher led the Wolfpack with three ace serves, Selting had two, Parks and Schindler each had one. From the service line they were 43 of 48.
EPPJ had just two ace blocks in the match, one each from Parks and Seier.
The Wolfpack had 18 digs in the match, Wemhoff led the way with five, Mescher had four while Schumacher and Parks each had three. Selting added two and Schindler had one.
Top hitters for the Wolfpack were Selting and Parks with six kills apiece, two from Stamp while Seier and Schumacher each had one.
Parks and Wemhoff each had six set assists in the match, Beckman added two and Schumacher had one.
Mescher led in serve receive with eight, Wemhoff, Parks and Schumacher each had four.
Shelby-Rising City
With two victories secured, the Wolfpack had just one obstacle remaining in their quest to win the tournament — Shelby-Rising City.
The Wolfpack dropped the first game 25 to 17. Then, they were two points away from losing the match when they rallied to win game two 26 to 24. The team carried momentum from the second game into the final game which they won by the score of 25 to 16.
Statistical leaders for the Wolfpack were Selting with three ace serves, Schumacher had two. EPPJ was 68 of 70 serving in the match.
Schumacher and Seier each had one ace block in the championship match.
EPPJ produced 24 digs in the match, led by Schumacher with 10, Parks had eight.
At the net, Selting led all hitters with nine kills. Seier and Parks each had six kills followed by Schumacher with four, Beckman and Stamp each had two.
Parks led the team in set assists with 14, Wemhoff had eight and Schumacher produced two.
Mescher led the team in serve receive with 13, Schindler had 10 and Parks was credited with seven.
Saturday’s three match victories boosted the Wolfpack’s record to 6-2.
