Fangman, Kinney Lead Wolfpack Wrestlers at Elgin Invite

ELGIN — What began with a 27-second pin in the first round ended up being a championship medal for Andrew Fangman Saturday at the Elgin Public Tournament.Fangman, one of four members on the Wolfpack wrestling team, won the 145-pound weight class by pinning all four of his opponents.
Boosting his record to 13-7, Fangman began his run to the title by pinning Ricky Mayo (Madison JV) in 27 seconds. Next up was Jose Rodriguez of Clearwater/Orchard. Fangman pinned Rodriguez in 43 seconds. In the third round he took down Zachariah Bliss (Aurora JV) in 1:32. Fangman’s last match of the day was against Ponca’s Leo Markworth. Fangman pinned Markworth in 3:26 to place first in his weight class.
Teammate Brett Kinney placed second in the 138-pound weight class. Kinney defeated Michael Brewer of Ponca 7 to 3; topped Madison JV’s Luis Saldana 13 to 6. In his third match of the day, Nebraska Christian’s Jaydon Elge pinned Kinney in 2:42. Kinney, a senior, came back strong in his final match, defeating Clearwater/Orchard’s Riley Snider 9 to 3.
Geoffrey Carr placed third in the 113-pound weight class. Carr was pinned by Garrett Gleason of St. Mary’s in 1:31. In his second match, Carr was pinned by Juan Lasso (Nebraska Christian) in 2:37.
At 160 pounds, Wolfpack wrestler Brody Hupp placed fourth. Hupp’s opening round match was against Clearwater/Orchard’s Alex Wilder. Wilder pinned Hupp in 1:28. Next up for Hupp was Ryan Thiem of Boone Central. Thiem pinned Hupp in 59 seconds. Hupp’s final match of the day was against Ponca’s Sean Uhl who pinned the Wolfpack wrestler in 1:47.
