Alvin S. Schrage, 89 of Elgin, NE, passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at the Golden Living Center in Neligh, NE.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin, NE, with Rev. Ross Burkhalter officiating, and interment followed in the parish cemetery. Visitation was Sunday at the church, with a 7:30 p.m. wake service
Memorials are suggested to St. Boniface Church, St. Boniface School, and Pope John High School. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.huffmanlevander.com.

Alvin Stephen Schrage, son of Stephen and Philomena (Liekhus) Schrage, was born June 2, 1924 at Elgin, NE. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Church, attended St. Boniface and Elgin High Schools and graduated in 1942. He farmed with his father until entering the US Navy in May 1944 and served his country until being honorably discharged in May 1946. He returned to Elgin, NE and resumed farming on his parents’ farm.
On August 17, 1953, Al married Mary Helen Fritz at St. Boniface Church in Elgin, NE. They lived on the family farm near Elgin, NE where they were blessed with three children: Deb, Sherri and Mark. Al continued living on the farm until moving to town in 1987.
He continued his time working around the farm, referring to himself as a “suitcase farmer”.
Al entered the Golden Living Center in Neligh in January 2013, and passed away there on September 25, 2013 at the age of 89.
Al enjoyed farming, raising cattle, playing cards, reading, learning about history, hunting for arrowheads and Indian artifacts, traveling with life long friends Ray and Leora Dinslage, and most of all spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was a lifetime member of St. Boniface Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post #229 and VFW Post #5816 of Elgin. He was a former member of the Cedar Township Board and the St. Boniface Parish Council.
Al is survived by his wife Mary Helen of Elgin, NE; three children: Deb (Kyle) Warren of Elgin, NE; Sherri (Dave) Peterson of Norfolk, NE; Mark (Brenda) Schrage of Elgin, NE; 7 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; one brother: Urban (Celine) Schrage of Salinas, CA ; two sisters-in-law: Juan Hoefer of Elgin, NE; Dorothy Schrage of Red Oak, IA; one brother-in-law: Paul (Joan) Fritz of Owensboro, KY; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law Terry Zegers; grandson Andrew Peterson; six brothers: Hubert, Clarence, Gilbert, Wilfred and Art; a sister: Philomena Lee: sisters-in-law: Annabel Schrage, Margaret Schrage and Joanie Fritz; brothers-in-law: Leonard Hoefer and Robert Lee.
