St. Mary’s Upends Wolfpack Girls

ELGIN — The shots just wouldn’t fall for the Wolfpack Friday night as O’Neill St. Mary’s claimed a 76 to 40 victory at St. Boniface gymnasium.
The Wolfpack managed just four points in the first quarter, all coming on free throws, as the Cardinals jumped out to a 19 to 4 lead.
Chelsi Mescher scored the Wolfpack’s first basket of the game at the 5:15 mark in the second quarter to cut the Cards’ lead to 27 to 6. Sydney Schumacher and Nicki Beckman added field goals in the quarter. Mescher then hit two free throws with under a minute to play before halftime to make the score 42 to 14.
With Wolfpack fans cheering the team on at the start of the second half, EPPJ turned in a big quarter, outscoring the Cardinals 20 to 15. Mescher had nine points in the quarter, Jenna Parks added eight as they helpled cut the Cards’ lead to 23 points entering the fourth quarter.
St. Mary’s then closed out the game by outscoring the Wolfpack 19 to six to seal the victory.
One key to the game was shots. St. Mary’s shot the ball 55 times, making 26. In contrast, the Wolfpack had just 37 field goal attempts, converting 12 into points. A bright spot for the Wolfpack was free throw shooting, they made 16 of 18 free throw attempts.
Mescher led the Wolfpack with 13 points, Parks had 12.
